A short story about me

I’m not naturally talkative, but with a little help from alcohol, I find the courage to connect with others. While I may not have a wealthy father to inherit a wine cellar from, I do have an open-minded dad who encouraged my passion for wine. In 2012, he supported my journey to Burgundy to study wine in my early twenties. At that time, Burgundy was much more affordable, though still a stretch for a student like me. Thankfully, I had wonderful friends and classmates with whom I shared memorable bottles. It was a remarkable year.

I was later fortunate enough to land a job in London, working for the oldest wine merchant in the country — truly a dream come true. The role allowed me to taste wines from diverse regions around the world, from unfiltered Sherry and robust Madiran to pre-World War II Bordeaux. I immersed myself in wine through numerous ways, embarking on a quest for learning that continued during my time in Hong Kong.

Of course, my preferences have evolved; I am no longer the person who can finish a bottle of young unoaked Sauvignon Blanc.

In My 20s

It would be a lie to say that I am still on the hunt for the weirdest wines in the world. Those days of exploring highly natural wines and aromatic whites from Thailand are long behind me. While I appreciate Grower Champagnes, if I had to choose one final glass of Champagne, it would be a Krug.

I have come to embrace a Buddhist perspective: 見山是山,見山不是山,見山還是山 (I once saw mountains as mountains. With deeper understanding, I began to see beyond the facades. Now, I rest in simplicity, and the mountains remain just mountains).

In My 30s

The number of talented winemakers, wine educators, Masters of Wine, and Master Sommeliers is increasing each year, making it easier than ever to acquire a quality bottle of wine. However, global wine consumption has been declining, and that deeply saddens me. Through this platform, I hope to introduce more people to the world of wine and foster meaningful connections among them.

Like everyone else, I am just waiting for that extra reason—no matter how unconvincing—to open a bottle of wine.

Why am I doing this?
